Conduit Elbow

A conduit elbow is the most common way to assist in the wiring process when there is a change in direction. They usually come in 90 or 45 degrees and can be made of various materials and sizes. The type of environment that the conduit and elbow will be exposed to will determine what type of material they must be manufactured out of. Steel is the most common material used for most standard construction jobs. Stainless steel, coated, aluminum, or PVC are other options when there are harsh environments that could corrode the material. Which type of material the conduit elbow should be made of can also be determined by where it is being used. Inside, outside, in a wall, embedded in concrete, buried under ground. All these factors will help in making the decision. It may seem simple, but it could become very costly and even dangerous if the incorrect material is used in the wiring process. Along with the more common 90 and 45 degree conduit elbow there can also be 30 or 60 degree. They are usually regarded as special so they could cost a bit more. When ordering the elbows it is good to make sure the radius is going to match the radius of the conduit being used. Sometimes there will be situations where a special radius is going to be needed. When this happens there is a little bit of math involved to make sure the correct size is ordered. The center of the elbow must be found and then the straight section of pipe is to be subtracted from each end. Then you can find where the ends of the elbow meet at a 90 degree and the distance from that point to the center of the elbow will be the new radius. The type, size, and material of a conduit elbow can get confusing if you are not familiar with electrical wiring procedures along with local and state codes for application.
