Electrical Conduit Fittings

Electrical conduit fittings come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials. It is very important to know exactly which type is needed for a particular job so there are no electrical problems in the future, and that all local and state codes are met. The cost of an electrical job can increase immensely when the wrong material is used and the safety of the people around the electrical units can be compromised. Whether it is wiring a house or machines in a factory the environment in which the wires will be exposed must be taken into account. The wrong conduit and fittings can cause premature wear and tear on the electrical system as well as create a fire hazard. There are many materials that electrical conduit fittings can be manufactured of. It is finding the right one for the job that can get tricky.

Most electrical conduit fittings for general purpose use with metal conduits are made of die-cast zinc. Where stronger fittings are needed they could be made of copper-free aluminum, or cast iron. Most conduit fittings are made with a gasketted cover to allow access for pulling through wires. Some fittings can be considered adequately conductive to bond the metal conduit to the metal junction box using the same grounding connection.

Others will need grounding bushings that have bonding jumpers from the bushing to a grounding screw. In applications where there will be water and the conduit itself must be liquid tight so not to cause a short in the system. The most common types of fittings are elbows, sweeps, and bends. These allow an angled change in direction. Adapters are used to connect two different types of pipe. Bulkhead fittings mount inside a wall and allow for pipe connections on either side of the barrier and couplings are used to join two types of conduits. These are just a few of the many types of fittings available for use in any number of electrical applications.

Other materials available for manufacturing of electrical conduit fittings are aluminum, stainless steel, nylon, PVC, polyester, or polyethylene. Aluminum is very common as it provides good electrical conductivity and resists oxidation.
